Discovering Llangan!

Year 5 have enjoyed an exceptionally productive week of learning and creativity.

In maths this week, our focus has continued to be on developing a secure understanding of place value. The children have been working with numbers up to the millions, comparing and ordering them, and applying their knowledge to practical problem-solving activities. This strong foundation will support all of our future work in number and calculation.

We have launched our new mini-inquiry, which centres on our local area of Llangan. As part of this study, pupils have begun to research significant historical figures connected to the community. This week they investigated David Jones, renowned for his contributions to Welsh art and literature, and John Prichard, the noted Victorian architect responsible for many church restorations across Wales. The children have compiled detailed fact files, practising their research and note-taking skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of local heritage.

Linking to our inquiry, the class explored the concept of Cynefin, a Welsh term describing a sense of place and belonging. Pupils selected a location within the school grounds where they feel safe and comfortable, and created observational sketches. This activity encouraged both mindfulness and an understanding of how the environment shapes our feelings of connection and security.

In English, we have embarked on a new writing journey aimed at crafting persuasive speeches. The children are learning to use rhetorical devices, emotive language and strong arguments to encourage others to visit Llangan. Drafting, planning and oral rehearsal will continue over the coming weeks as we refine these pieces for presentation.

All homework tasks and weekly spelling lists are available via the Homework tab on the school website. Please ensure that pupils access these resources regularly to consolidate their classroom learning.

Have a great weekend! See you on Monday!
